Handy Shakur Education is an educational consulting firm committed to strengthening outcomes for students, educators, schools, and communities. Through targeted academic support, educator development, and strategic educational solutions, we help our partners turn potential into progress.
Our Story
Handy Shakur Education was founded by LaTanya Handy and Crystal Shakur, two educational leaders brought together by a shared belief: every student has the potential to succeed when they are surrounded by skilled educators, intentional support, and meaningful opportunities to grow.
Through years of working with students, educators, families, schools, and community organizations, we saw firsthand that improving student outcomes requires more than a single solution. Students may need targeted academic intervention. Educators may need additional tools and professional support. Schools and organizations may need greater capacity to turn their goals into action.We created Handy Shakur Education to bring those pieces together.
Today, we provide academic intervention, educator development, curriculum and instructional support, and educational consulting designed to meet partners where they are and help move them toward where they want to be.

LaTanya Handy

LaTanya Handy is an educational leader with more than 15 years of experience spanning classroom instruction, literacy intervention, instructional coaching, curriculum development, educator development, school improvement, and nonprofit leadership. Her work focuses on strengthening instructional practice, closing learning gaps, and developing systems that lead to meaningful student growth.
LETRS-trained and experienced in Science of Reading-aligned practices, LaTanya brings expertise in literacy, data-informed instruction, teacher development, and educational leadership to Handy Shakur Education. Her experience working with students, educators, schools, and community organizations allows her to approach educational challenges with both an instructional and systems-level perspective.
Crystal Shakur
Co-Founder | Educational Leadership & Program Development.
Crystal Shakur is an accomplished educator and nonprofit executive with more than 30 years of experience supporting students, educators, and families. Her background spans classroom instruction, literacy intervention, tutoring, instructional coaching, academic programming, and educational leadership, giving her a deep understanding of how to identify learning needs and create targeted pathways for student success.
As an experienced educational leader and Executive Director of Grateful Education Foundation, Crystal brings expertise in student development, program leadership, community-centered education, and academic support to Handy Shakur Education. Her work is grounded in creating meaningful learning opportunities that help students, educators, schools, and communites build skills, confidence, and a strong foundation for continued success.
